Borealis blog…

... in the studio.

The recording and production stages of Borealis’ first CD ‘Borealis the songs of Robert Burns … in colour’ happened in Jean’s recording studio. The final mixes were then sent off to be mastered elsewhere at www.masteringworld.com and then signed to the Lochshore Record Label in 2007.

It’s a slow process all this recording malarkey, mainly because of the difficulties of getting us all in the same room at the same time over and above ‘gigging’ duties.

We’re now in the middle of Borealis’ second CD, unnamed as yet, but a continuation of our aim of accessible, colourful arrangements and performances of the songs of Robert Burns.

So this is our ‘blog’ page related to that recording process, which we’ll update from time to time as things progress.

But to start us off, on the right you’ll find an audio mp3 sample of Robert Burns ‘Whistle and I’ll come to ye’.

As yet, it’s unpolished and a long way from finished, but you’ll also be able to open a view of Jean’s computer screen to see what’s going on.

Ken’s guitar and vocal aren’t in there yet, but it’s shaping up. Janice’s main vocal as it appears/sounds here may or may not be the ‘final cut’…decisions, decisions.

The sequencer programme being used is Sonar Producer Edition 7 for the music techies out there. You can see all the various tracks starting to pile up including drums, bass, piano, strings and vocals.

Borealis on the road … recent gaffs and various trivia:

Andy, while drumming at a gig recently managed to get his bass drum pedal stuck up his trouser leg.

Jean, explaining one of Robert Burns’ most unforgettable song lines then couldn’t remember it.

At a recent event, it took Janice about half an hour to clear her mouth for vocalising after being asked to judge an oatcake competition.

Jean recommends Maybelline Superstay lipstick for moothie playing to avoid looking like ‘The Joker’ from ‘Batman’ at the end of a song.

Is there for honest poverty ( last verse ): Robert Burns

Then let us pray that come it may
(As come it will for a' that)
That Sense and Worth o'er a' the earth
Shall bear the gree an' a' that!
For a' that, an' a' that,
It's comin yet for a' that,
That man to man the world o'er
Shall brithers be for a' that.
